Digital signatures are offered in a wide variety of forms by various service providers. However, very few, if any, of those digital signatures are legally binding. The Estonian digital infrastructure is one-of-a-kind in the world. In Estonian law, electronic signatures have the same legal weight as traditional paper signatures.
The law itself does not do much on its own, but in Estonia we also have government issued ID-cards
and an extension to the physical card -- the Mobile-ID solution.
What the ID-card/Mobile-ID and the Estonian legislature enable is proper authenticity, where the person can be fully authenticated and the integrity of the signed documents ensured.
The next step is to provide such legally binding digital signatures globally, and not only to Estonians. Again, the Estonian government has thought about this. The Republic of Estonia is the first country to offer e-Residency -- a transnational digital identity that is available to anyone in the world. e-Residency enables secure and convenient digital services
that facilitate credibility and trust online.
There are many other possibilities related to the proper authentication of global digital signing, as well as ensuring the integrity of documents. Here, the solution is to offer globally secure digital signatures that are facilitated by blockchain technologies.
In such a case, there is no need to use additional hardware (card readers) or additional software to provide the digital signatures or to verify the digital signatures received from others.
Legally binding digital signatures are a daily norm for us in Estonia -- so if you wish to take advantage of blockchain technologies and global digital signatures then contact us, and let’s make it a reality!
